Summer skin starts in spring

Posted by Jody Burke on

It happens every year. As soon as we get those first glimpses of warmer spring weather, our thoughts start turning to summer and how we want to look and feel when it arrives. And for many of us, that includes our skin.

After months of cold weather, indoor heating and lower humidity, our skin doesn’t always emerge from winter looking or feeling its best. It may be drier, duller or more reactive. Redness can be more noticeable, texture may feel less refined and some of that healthy luminosity can be missing.

But September gives us something we don’t have once summer arrives: time.

Rather than waiting until December and looking for a quick fix, spring is the ideal time to start rebuilding hydration, improving skin quality and stimulating the collagen that helps keep skin looking smooth, strong and healthy.

Think beyond the surface
When we talk about getting our skin ready for summer, it’s tempting to focus on what we can immediately see. But some of the most worthwhile changes happen beneath the surface. Collagen is a good example. As we age, our natural collagen production gradually slows, contributing to changes in firmness, texture and the appearance of fine lines. Treatments that stimulate new collagen are not designed to create an overnight transformation, but rather work progressively, encouraging the skin to renew and strengthen over time. This is one of the reasons we recommend starting well before summer.

Building healthy, glowing skin from within
One of our favourite treatments for improving overall skin quality is Cutera Laser Genesis. A gentle, non-ablative laser treatment, Laser Genesis uses controlled heat beneath the skin's surface to stimulate collagen production and support healthier skin renewal.

What makes it particularly useful is its versatility. Rather than treating one isolated concern, Laser Genesis can help improve several of the changes we commonly see in skin, such as:

  • Diffuse redness and rosacea
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven texture and tone
  • Fine lines
  • The appearance of certain scars
  • Overall skin texture and luminosity

It’s comfortable (feels like the warm sun on your face), requires virtually no downtime and can be suitable for a broad range of skin types and tones. For many of our clients, it is less about dramatically changing the way their skin looks and more about helping their skin look consistently better: calmer, smoother, clearer and healthier.

And yes, you can have Laser Genesis in summer
We often hear clients say they assume laser treatments need to stop once the weather warms up. Some do require careful timing around sun exposure, but Laser Genesis can be performed throughout spring and summer because it is doesn’t remove the surface layer of the skin. That makes it a useful treatment for maintaining skin quality and continuing to stimulate collagen during the warmer months when more intensive resurfacing treatments may not be appropriate.

Of course, sun protection still matters. We don’t treat actively tanned skin, and it is important to talk to us about recent or planned sun exposure before any laser treatment. Daily SPF is also essential, whether you are having treatments or not.

Give your skin time
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that good skin takes time. You may notice your skin looking fresher after Laser Genesis, but the real value comes from the progressive changes that occur as collagen production is stimulated and skin quality improves.

Starting now gives those changes time to happen. It also means we can look at your skin properly, understand what has changed over winter and put together a treatment and skincare plan that makes sense for you, rather than trying to address everything when summer has already arrived.

So, if you want your skin looking its best by December, September is a very good place to start.
