Acne

From persistent congestion to inflamed breakouts, acne can affect skin at any age. A clear plan starts by understanding the type of acne and what may be driving it.

All skin conditions

What acne is

Acne develops when follicles become blocked by oil and dead skin cells. It may appear as blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, deeper nodules or a combination of these.

Breakouts commonly affect the face, chest, shoulders and back. Adult acne is also common, and the right approach depends on the pattern, severity, skin sensitivity and whether scarring is developing.

What can contribute

Acne is influenced by more than surface cleanliness. Oil production, follicle congestion, bacteria and inflammation all play a role, while individual triggers vary.

  • Hormonal changes and genetics
  • Excess oil and a build-up of dead skin cells
  • Occlusive skincare, makeup or friction
  • Stress, some medicines and individual lifestyle factors

Breakouts in context

Treat active acne before chasing the marks.

Acne is not a sign that skin is dirty. It develops inside the follicle as oil and dead skin cells build up, with inflammation shaping whether you see congestion, blackheads, tender papules, pustules or deeper nodules. Hormones, genetics, products, friction and some medicines can influence the pattern. Because several conditions can resemble acne, persistent, painful or rapidly worsening breakouts deserve an accurate diagnosis rather than increasingly aggressive home treatment.

Build a routine the skin can tolerate

The first goal is to reduce active breakouts and protect the skin barrier. Over-cleansing, scrubbing and layering multiple strong actives can leave skin irritated without clearing the underlying process. A useful routine is usually consistent and uncomplicated: gentle cleansing, non-comedogenic hydration, daily sun protection and targeted ingredients selected for the type of acne. We will ask what you already use so an in-clinic plan does not compete with prescription or over-the-counter products.

Picking and squeezing can deepen inflammation and increase the chance of persistent colour or scarring. If you are developing painful nodules, widespread acne or scarring, medical input may be appropriate. Our role is to identify when clinic treatments could support the plan and when referral should come first.

Where peels and laser facials may fit

For suitable congestion and surface texture, a clinician-selected chemical peel may support exfoliation without the guesswork of at-home peeling. Laser Genesis, sometimes described as a low-downtime laser facial, may be discussed for selected redness, texture and post-acne concerns. eLOS Rejuvenation is another option the clinician may consider after assessing inflammation, sensitivity and skin tone. No treatment suits every breakout, and a staged approach is often kinder than trying to address everything at once.

Active acne and established scars are different jobs. Once breakouts are under control, read our guide to acne scars and textural scarring to understand why microneedling or resurfacing may be considered for some scar patterns. Flat brown or red marks after acne are not always true scars and may need a different pathway.

What progress can look like

Acne plans take time. Skin may need several cycles before the direction is clear, and maintenance can matter as much as the initial course. We will explain likely short-term reactions, appointment spacing and the point at which the plan should be reviewed. See our current treatment pricing and clinic FAQ, or book an acne consultation to talk through your skin and current routine.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Active acne and acne scarring need different treatment strategies. We assess both before building a plan.

What acne treatments do you offer?

Depending on your skin, we may discuss Laser Genesis, Elos Skin Rejuvenation or a clinical skin peel. Your consultation helps us decide whether treatment is appropriate and how it should be paced.

Will treatment make my acne flare first?

Skin responses vary by treatment and by person. Your clinician will explain likely short-term changes, aftercare and when to contact the clinic before you proceed.

Can the same treatment help acne scars?

Active breakouts and established scars are assessed separately. Once acne is controlled, treatments such as Dermapen microneedling or resurfacing may be considered for suitable acne scars.
